Be Iago or not Iago...
In Shakespeare's play 'Othello', Iago, the vile conniving lieutenant of the powerful but insecure military General of Othello, in explaining himself to Rodreigo says,
In following him, I am following myself
Iago pretends to the outside world that he is following his master Othello. But truly, he is following only himself. His loyalty is only to himself and his own goals. When his goals are not met the way he wants to, he will turn against his master. Iago desires to be Othello's second in command. When that does not pan out, his true colors come out. He begins to plot against his master ultimately destroying him.
In life we all have goals we want to achieve. Some of the goals are very essential to what we deem to be human - like having a good job, having a good family, having a good place to live in. In Christian living, when our goals do not pan out the way we want it to, how we respond to that shows our true colors and we know if we are being Iago or not. Our response when facing disappointments brings up the question of whether in spite of God not meeting what we deem to be our minimalist goals, we will still follow God. The underlying question being whether we follow Him for who He is or if in the name of following him, we truly are only loyal to the goals we want to pursue for ourselves.
